Andalusia is proud to be the top producing region of ecological food in Spain and is one of the biggest exporters of organic produce in the country. With almost a million hectares devoted to organic produce, it’s not hard to understand why. Eco-friendly farming practices help preserve the environment as well as having the added benefit of maintaining the soil’s fertility. Pesticides affect soil quality and natural food chains, and therefore we must work with nature for a sustainable future.

What makes Andalusia special?

The land is fertile in this region, and the Mediterranean climate means that it is the only area in Europe where sub-tropical fruit can grow. Locally grown fruits and vegetables are abundant while honey and wine are also produced without adding harmful pesticides.
And of course, let’s not forget extra virgin olive oil, also known as ‘liquid gold’. In 2015, 7 out of the top 10 best organic olive oils came from Andalusia. Spain is the largest exporter of olive oil in the world and over a third of the farmers are based in the region. The olive oil, similar to the local wines, is certified with a “Denominación de Orígen” (D.O) which means that the oil is not altered
and therefore retains the fragrance and original essence of the olive.

Why organic?

Research shows that eating natural foods is more nutritious and can help the fight against disease, childhood allergies, and certain cancers. Olive oil slows the effects of ageing and prevents problems with cholesterol as well as other ailments. All great reasons to ‘go organic’. Ecological produce can be found locally in organic food markets and specialist shops.
